Beginners' Resources
    Advising Technology Education Center (ATECH)
    The Tech Commission's own resource providing tips and other written instructional material especially for NACADA members who are interested in learning more about various technologies. Current topics include a glossary of technology terms, how to design a successful Web site, and "netiquette."

    Beginners' Central
    Topics include learning while you surf (the Internet), downloading programs from the Web, setting up e-mail programs, myths of the Internet, viruses, and more.

    Internet 101
    "Internet 101 was created for those who want to know just the basics. Come and discover how the Internet works. Find out where you can get great software. Learn the secrets of search engines. Have your questions answered and problems solved."

    Internet for Beginners
    A place to learn more about the Internet and get all your questions answered. The site's goal is "to demystify the Internet—to make it simple, non-intimidating, and most of all, fun!"

Creating Web Pages
    A Beginner's Guide to HTML
    A primer for creating documents in HTML, the markup language used by the World Wide Web. The site is maintained by the National Center for Supercomputing Applications (NCSA) at The University of Illinois - Urbana/Champaign.

    Guide to Developing Online Student Services
    This Web site is intended to help higher education institutions develop effective online approaches to delivering student support services. It provides:

    • general tips for designing effective online student services,
    • brief discussions on a range of student support services, especially the needs of online and distant learners,
    • guidelines for basic good practice in delivering these services via the Internet, and
    • examples of some institutions that use the Internet to offer students a variety of opportunities for self-help and customized services in addition to providing information and electronic forms online.

    Is Your Website Accessible?
    A site about the importance, necessity, and urgency of making institutional Web sites accessible to people with disabilities.

    RightNow Web
    Allows organizations to create Web-accessible knowledge bases of frequently asked questions (FAQs). Each time a customer accesses a knowledge base entry, they are given the opportunity to rate the effectiveness of the answer. This valuable feedback mechanism allows the knowledge base to intelligently rank its own entries by effectiveness, so that subsequent visitors will be presented with the best answers first.

    Web Accessibility Initiative (WAI)
    WAI, in coordination with organizations around the world, pursues accessibility of the Web through five primary areas of work: technology, guidelines, tools, education and outreach, and research and development. Includes suggestions for how to get started on making a Web site accessible.

    Web Developer's Virtual Library
    This site has everything you ever wanted to know about web designing. The site is very extensive but geared towards the more accomplished web developer.



Databases
    EDUCAUSE Information Resources Library
    An international repository for information about managing and using information resources in higher education. Resources include campus documents, such as policies, RFPs, and strategic plans, conference papers, articles from EDUCAUSE publications, and useful Web resources. Many items are available electronically.

    Fédération des commissions scolaires du Québec (FCSQ)
    The Fédération des commissions scolaires du Québec (FCSQ) coordinates the activities of sixty school boards. The FCSQ mission is to promote education and to represent and defend the interest of the school boards. (This site is in French.)

    The National Clearinghouse for Academic Advising
    The Clearinghouse "promotes the advancement of academic advising through the greater dissemination of pertinent resources and research." For research, the Clearinghouse links to ERIC Advanced Search and provides suggested keywords for searching advising topics. The Clearinghouse also provides links to NACADA award winning publications and advising programs as well as other Web resources advisors find useful.
