Commission Reports: Academic Advising News
February 2002
As the new chair of the Technology in Advising Commission, I would first like to thank Chuck Haberle, immediate past chair, for all of his assistance as I prepared to take on the responsibilities of commission chair. Chuck did an excellent job as commission chair for the past four years (a double term), and I couldn't have asked for more support than he gave me in making this transition. Thank you, Chuck, for all that you have done (and continue to do) for the commission!

Approximately 35 technology-related conference sessions were offered in Ottawa. Four had been selected as commission-sponsored sessions based on the commission's annual review of proposal abstracts and evaluations from previous conference presentations. Each sponsored session was introduced by a member of the Tech Commission's steering committee. The four commission-sponsored sessions and their presenters were:
- "Advisor's Toolkit: Creating an Administrative Advising Database" (extended session) Jane E. Stringer and Cynthia P. Konecko, Temple University
- "Cyber Space Advising for Orientation and Beyond" Margaret S. Theriault and David Lewis, University of South Florida
- "Making One Web-site for All Users" Jackie C. Gottlieb and Andrea L. Irby, North Carolina State University
- "Students' and Advisors' Perceptions of Appropriate E-mail Use" Wesley Lipschultz, Penn State University
In addition, three of the technology-related sessions presented at the Ottawa conference had been voted "Best of Region" at NACADA regional conferences last spring. These sessions and their presenters were:
- "The Intersection of Technology and Advising" (Best of Region 1) Anne M. Sullivan and Cynthia Seltzer, Northeastern University
- "Email and Academic Advising: Power, Problems, and Polices" (Best of Region 5) Antoinette J. Morales and Karen L. Wittkopp, University of Michigan
- "Electronic Advising: Web Based Course/Video Advising has Arrived" (extended session and Best of Region 9) Steven H. Brown, California State University Monterey Bay
Congratulations to the presenters of these commission-sponsored sessions and Best of Region sessions.
