Commission Reports: Academic Advising News

April 1998

The Technology in Advising Commission is continuing to pursue a variety of NACADA technology projects. With the valuable assistance of our 13-member steering committee, the commission is currently involved in aspects of regional and national conference planning, issues related to student information systems technology, and other initiatives. Our recently formed commission "Project Teams" (see below for project team information) are steadily making progress in these areas.

Our "Regional Activities" team is exploring the possible creation of technology training "lesson plans" which could be incorporated into regional and national conferences. Several members have already developed pre-conference and conference proposals for the San Diego national conference that will bring some level of technology education to NACADA members. Similar programs could then be made available at regional conferences. In addition, this group is exploring whether a "Technology Institute" or technology training workshop series would be a viable project for NACADA to pursue. Commission members are also involved in facilitating commission meetings to expand on these and other ideas at a few of the regional conferences this spring.

"Student Information Systems" continue to be a hot topic among those interested in advising technology. Discussions concerning the roles of advising professionals in these systems, system/vendor comparisons, and educational information about technology support systems are just some of the issues that the SIS project team plans to explore in the coming months.

The San Diego conference is quickly approaching and the Technology in Advising Commission is assisting with the conference's technology efforts. Members of the commission steering committee have solicited technology proposals from NACADA members, and reviewed, critiqued and recommended proposals to the national planning committee. In addition, the Commission is hoping to establish an "Electronic Publication Award" as well as a "Technology Showcase" highlighting some of our highest quality technology sessions.

Advising technology issues and concerns are being addressed by the Technology in Advising Commission. However, these issues are numerous, with some obviously more critical than others. It is simply not possible to confront all of these issues without increased participation from our membership. As chair of the commission, I encourage NACADA members interested in advising technology to get involved in one or more of our initiatives so that we can enlarge our scope and more effectively address this range of issues.

Lastly, in an effort to highlight the varied advising technology interests and backgrounds among our steering committee members, the Technology in Advising Commission has created "Member Profiles" for those interested in our achievements and experiences.
