Commission Reports: Academic Advising News

September 1999

NACADA has seen a steady increase in the quantity and quality of advising technology presentations at our national conference. This year's conference in Denver is certain to continue this trend as advisors seek to expose and develop themselves in the area of advising technology. Thirty-nine conference proposals have been reviewed with most being recommended by the Technology in Advising Commission's steering committee for inclusion in this year's conference. Presentation formats include traditional concurrent sessions, roundtable and poster sessions, as well as pre-conference workshops.

The conference will also provide participants with opportunities to get involved in the commissions's activities or to simply network with other colleagues interested in advising technology. The Technology in Advising Commission's annual meeting (October 9th, 9 a.m.) will provide interested members with an overview of the commission's activities and projects, as well as a forum to briefly discuss advising technology issues and potential solutions. Please check the Denver conference program for more specific information on this session. The 2nd annual Electronic Publication Awards will be presented in Denver as part of NACADA's awards ceremony. The commission's selection committee has reviewed more than 20 electronic publication nominations.

At the conclusion of the Denver conference, chair-elect Susan Smith, Weber State University, will formally become commission chair. My thanks to Susan, Dan Knauft, University of Texas-Austin, and the rest of the commission steering committee for their efforts during my two years as chair. Kudos, also, to Mike Leonard, Penn State University, for his endless work developing and maintaining our commission website (WWW.PSU.EDU/DUS/NCTA). I think we have some solid advising technology ideas and projects that will continue to grow in the coming years. Thanks, also, to the dedicated staff of NACADA's Executive Office for helping to make my life as commission chair so much easier. From Bobbie, Nancy, Diane and the rest of the staff, the professionalism and dedication have been greatly appreciated.

Lastly, nominations for Technology in Advising Commission chair-elect are now being solicited. Please feel free to contact me if you are interested in seeking this elected position. The nomination deadline is Monday, October 11th.

Looking forward to seeing many of you in Denver.
