Commission Overview

Introduction

The purpose of NACADA's Technology in Advising Commission is to help academic advisors and advising administrators
  • understand the impact that technologies such as the Web, e-mail, degree audits, online registration, and student information systems have on academic advising,
  • use technology effectively in their work, and
  • appreciate the appropriate uses of technology in higher education.

A Brief History

Much of the impetus to create this commission is the direct result of the large turnout for the interest group meeting at the NACADA national conference in Las Vegas in 1994. Over 60 attendees met to discuss moving the interest group to commission status. Thanks to the guidance of several NACADA members, including Buddy Ramos, Vice-President for Commissions, and Dr. Hal Caldwell, ACADV listserv owner, the proposal for commission status was enthusiastically approved by the NACADA executive board at its 1995 mid-year meeting.

Immediately following board approval, several NACADA members were asked to serve on a steering committee for the newly formed commission. Dan Knauft, University of Texas, was selected as commission chair. The steering committee was put to work before the first commission meeting was even held. In early fall 1995, incoming NACADA president Michael McCauley of Ball State University asked the commission's steering committee for suggestions concerning the content of the proposed NACADA Web site.

The commission's first meeting was held at the national conference in Nashville, Tennessee, in October 1995. At that meeting, the executive board's strategic plan was discussed, and the items that specifically related to the Technology in Advising Commission were incorporated into the commission's strategic goals.

Following the completion of Dan Knauft's two-year term at the end of the 1997 national conference in Kansas City, Chuck Haberle of Providence College succeeded Dan as commission chair, having served as incoming chair following the 1996 NACADA elections. Chuck served two consecutive two-year terms, agreeing to take on the additional (second) term when circumstances created an unexpected vacancy. Listed below are all of the chairs who have served the Technology in Advising Commission:
  • Dan Knauft, University of Texas, 1995–1997
  • Chuck Haberle, Providence College, 1997–1999 and 1999–2001
  • Mike Leonard, Penn State, 2001–2003
  • Andrea Irby, NC State, 2003–2005
  • Lauren Wass, Florida International University, 2005–2006 (partial term)
  • Renee Babcock, University of Texas at Austin, 2006–2007 (partial term) and 2007–2009

Strategic Goals

  • Provide support, information, and education to NACADA members in their use of technology in advising
