Get Involved

"College is about exploring yourself, exploring your interests, and your personality. And by getting involved on campus, you're going to be able to do that."

~Joe, former DUS student majoring in Information Sciences and Technology

Are you interested in:

  • international development and human rights?
  • preserving rare animal species all around the world?
  • keeping our air and water free from chemicals?
  • understanding global markets?
  • living, learning, or working in other countries?
  • global health issues?
  • international dialogue?

College is the perfect time to explore the increasingly interconnected societies around the world and begin to become true global citizens. Learn how you can develop your interests, relate them to personal and academic goals, and start to make exciting world-wide connections while you are right here at Penn State.

Check out the resources below. If you have questions or wish further guidance, contact Dr. Elena Galinova, at 814-865-7576 or exg154@psu.edu.

Special opportunity: Would you like to create your first Global Citizenship Portfolio? It can be recognized as the research component of your DUS Certificate of Educational Engagement, and/or it could be nominated for presentation at the Undergraduate Research Exhibition during spring semester.

First, identify an issue of interest (e.g., some specific aspect of democracy building, human rights, environmental protection, global health, poverty relief, etc.). Next, trace the social and historical context of your global issue in one or several countries and find out what different agencies and organizations are doing to resolve it (search for specific examples). Finally, write a brief essay (three-four standard pages) about this issue as it relates to your current academic interests and/or professional plans and ways you can continue exploring it at Penn State through majors, minors, or co-curricular activities.

These are a few of the greatest nonprofit organizations and key institutional actors in the world today. Some of them offer internships. Learn more about them and think how they might relate to issues and activities that interest you.
