Advising Prep Assignments
Overview
As a Penn State student, you are expected to take responsibility for your educational choices, including choice of major and choice of courses. Academic advisers are available to assist you in educational planning and to help you learn information specific to Penn State. Your responsibility begins on your FTCAP advising day, but academic advisers will be there to help every step of the way.
In order to prepare for the educational decisions you will make, you must view and complete the following preparatory assignments:
- Understanding a Penn State Degree interactive module.
- Registering for Courses interactive module.
- Exploring Your Academic Choices preparatory assignment. Bring the completed assignment to your FTCAP advising day.
- Watch the video "Taking Responsibility" Quicktime Movie (.mov) or the Windows Media File Movie (.wmf).
If you have any difficulty getting the documents above to open please see our Troubleshooting page.
At your FTCAP advising day, you will be making some initial choices about your education at Penn State.
- In the morning, you will have the opportunity to discuss your choice of college or major (although you will not declare your major) and FTCAP placement testing results, and, if appropriate, make changes to your college of enrollment.
- In the afternoon, you will work with an academic adviser in your college of enrollment to discuss your educational plan and create your first semester's schedule.
The goal of your FTCAP advising day is to help you better understand your college education and its components. Academic advisers in your college are available to help you consider your possibilities. As you learn more about yourself and Penn State, you may make changes to your educational pathways. If you discover you would like to make changes to your academic choices, advisers are available to facilitate the process.
