What will be on the English Test?
This test will be important to all students, since all students must schedule coursework in English composition. The purpose of this test is to measure your competence in the following areas of English usage: spelling, vocabulary, punctuation, grammar, and diction. You may not use a dictionary for this test.
Spelling - You will be asked to identify from groups of words the ones that are misspelled.
Vocabulary - You will be asked to identify synonyms and antonyms.
Punctuation - You will be asked to identify inaccurate punctuation such as omission of required punctuation, punctuation where none should be, or use of the wrong punctuation mark.
Grammar and Diction - You will be asked to evaluate the correctness of the grammar and diction of parts of sentences.
An outstanding performance on this test will qualify you to enroll in English 30 (Honors Freshman Composition).
A low score on this test will indicate a basic skills weakness, in which case you should consider enrolling in English 4, English 5, or both. (This information has been approved by the Department of English)
