If I have credits for English, Math,
and/or Chemistry, do I still need to take the tests?
The placement tests assess your readiness
for English 15 or 30, Math 110 or 140, and Chemistry 110. If you have college
level coursework and/or AP credits in these areas, here are our recommendations:
- Take the tests if Penn State has evaluated your transfer and/or AP credits and they do NOT count as these courses;
- Take the tests if your transfer credits are still in progress;
- Access the Transfer Course Evaluation Web site to determine if you will receive credit for English 15, Math 21, 22, 26, 41, 110 or 140 and/or Chemistry 110. Select the link "For Prospective Students" and follow the directions. You must receive a grade of "C" or better in the courses for them to transfer. If you will be receiving credit for any of these courses, you do not have to take our placement test for that particular subject, however, learning more about your potential performance in Penn State specific courses by taking these placement tests may actually benefit you. If this Web site indicates that the credit you will receive in these three subjects is "General Credit," then we recommend you take our placement tests to determine which Penn State course is most appropriate for you to begin your studies.
If you do not need to take one or more of the three placement tests, you MUST call the testing support staff at 814-865-8270 to change your testing profile. Be sure to also complete Parts I and II of the online Educational Planning Survey as this document assists your adviser.
Bring a copy of your previous institution's transcript and/or your AP test results with you to your advising day in January to discuss with your academic adviser.
