Golf at Penn State can be traced as far back as 1889.  Three of the four holes were located at the far east boundary of campus but their exact location remains a mystery.

The first regulation nine holes were laid out by Bob Rutherford Sr. and R.D. Pryde in 1921 and was located to the west of Atherton Street.  Willie Park Jr. designed a second nine holes which was opened in 1926.  In 1949 several holes were reconstructed leaving the White Course most golfers would recognize today.  The course was operated from a two story wooden frame cottage on the east side of Atherton Street near the present location of Rec Hall.

The original Blue Course, designed by Harrison and Garban was opened in 1970.  Measuring 7008 yards in distance, it was considerably longer than the White Course which measured 6025.  At the time of its conception the Blue Course was operated from a separate West College Avenue location.

In response to the growth of the university campus expansion the two courses were retrofitted in 1992-93 to operate from a central location.  Nine new holes were designed by the firm of Ault and Clark.  Several existing holes were also modified for north/south connection and opened for play in 1994.  The Walker Clubhouse, which is named after past university president, Eric Walker, was opened in the fall of 1994.
