A Blueprint for the Public Scholarship of Service Learning

March 29, 2003

Heritage Hall, HUB-Robeson Center

Penn State University, University Park, PA

The Public Scholarship of Service Learning finds voice in the application of the discoveries and creative performances generated by faculty and students to the civic and social well being of the community.

Our experience as university faculty, students, staff, and as members of the community confirm the findings of a growing body of research that the Public Scholarship of Service Learning promotes:

·         Deep Learning,

·         Successful Scholarship,

·         New Understanding of Diversity, and

·         Contribution to the Civic and Social Well-being of the Community

Please join colleagues from across the Commonwealth in a community forum to ask and respond to three questions:

·         What does it mean, to the university and to the community beyond, to be a member of an engaged public scholarship university?

·         What are the barriers to increased public scholarship?

·         How can we sustain public scholarship while recognizing ethical practices that support both the university and its neighbors?
