When you are sick or need health care advice, University Health Services (UHS) is your resource on campus. UHS provides high-quality outpatient health services to currently registered Penn State students. Experienced and caring professionals provide a wide range of services including acute care, preventive medicine, and health education. UHS staff members are specialists in student health. They have an accepting, nonjudgmental approach and understand your unique needs as students in an academic setting.

Services

Acute-care services -- All medical emergencies are seen immediately, and UHS offers same-day appointments for other pressing medical needs. Acute-care services include primary health care, urgent care, and an immunization clinic for allergy shots. For convenient, one-stop service, you have access to a pharmacy, clinical laboratory, X-ray, and physical therapy services on-site at the main facility. If you have health questions or are not sure if you need to be seen by a clinician, telephone advice nurses are also available twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week, at 863-4463.

Preventive medicine services -- UHS stresses preventive health care and offers contraception counseling and gynecological services through women's health visits, men's preventive health visits, and routine immunizations and injections required for overseas travel through the UHS Allergy Immunization Clinic.

Health education -- All UHS services, including acute care and preventive care services, have an educational component and recommendations for a healthy lifestyle. In addition, the Health Promotion and Wellness department offers a diverse array of educational activities. These programs promote health awareness, positive health behaviors, and disease prevention through workshops, special events, and personal assistance offered by peer and professional health educators. Additional health information about a wide range of topics is available on the UHS website and on HealthyPennState.psu.edu. Healthy Penn State resources are also available on Facebook and Twitter.

Locations and Hours -- UHS is located in the Student Health Center on Bigler Road, adjacent to Career Services.

UHS is open Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., and Wednesday from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Appointments can be scheduled through our website (http://studentaffairs.psu.edu/health) or by calling 863-0774. Urgent care is available on a walk-in basis (no appointments) on Saturdays during the fall and spring semesters from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

Please note: UHS provides emergency transportation services through University Ambulance Services and our EMS office twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week. Dial 911.

Fees -- There is a basic clinic visit fee. This fee covers most supplies and procedures performed at UHS. There are additional charges for laboratory tests, X-rays, physical therapy treatment, pharmacy, and ambulance services. You must pay at the time of services by either having the charge billed to your Penn State student account or paying by check, cash, VISA, or MasterCard. You can print copies of your UHS bill through our secure website.

Health Insurance -- Except for our pharmacy, UHS does not have contracts with any health insurance companies and it does not bill insurance companies directly. This means that you are responsible for paying any bills you incur at UHS for clinic visits, lab, X-ray, physical therapy, and ambulance services. However, you can submit the receipt for these services to your insurance company for possible reimbursement (which depends on your insurance coverage). UHS recommends that you find out ahead of time what services your insurance policy will cover.

The UHS pharmacy does have contracts with some health insurance providers. Please visit our website at studentaffairs.psu.edu/health/services/pharmacy/students.shtml to see if your pharmaceutical provider is listed.

Health insurance is required for international students, their spouses and children, and all graduate assistants/fellows. Health insurance is also strongly recommended for all students.
