Team # 629 -- Competencies for Job Classification Team

April 2004

Objective

Competencies for Job Classification was designed by compensation professionals from the Office of Human Resources. IT and HR staff from many units throughout the University were added to the team to provide input and development assistance. An executive oversight team comprised of deans and executives monitored the team’s progress as it researched and developed this new system. The result is a job classification model that clearly outlines the knowledge, skills, and characteristics needed to define employee jobs effectively and one that recognizes those attributes that contribute to both individual and university effectiveness.

The new system represents a collaborative approach to job classification. Positions are evaluated and staffing needs are determined at the department level, with Human Resources Representatives and Office of Human Resources staff supporting department efforts and advising units on compensation policy and practice. The model consists of one set of competencies that is applied in all job families. The competencies build from one level to another in a logical, measurable manner, allowing employees to identify the skills needed for possible progression into different positions, depending upon unit needs. The model also identifies additional competencies for management positions. This approach provides for flexibility in employee selection, professional development, and appraisal.
