Team # 862 -- Admissions Decisions Online
Undergraduate Education

January 2008

Objective

To design and implement an online system of delivering admission decisions to undergraduate applicants for all campuses and all colleges. The landscape of higher education, undergraduate admissions, and recruitment continues to become more and more heavily dependent on electronic forms of communication. These online tools facilitate a quicker and more effective communication flow and provides the opportunity for a reduction in the costs associated with paper processes. All undergraduate applicants are now able to log in to their secure My Penn State account and view not only the status of their aplication but also the final decision.

Results Achieved to Date

  • ExpectedResults: This process lessens the time between a decision being made on an application and the student knowing the outcome of that decision. This tool provides a way for students to self-monitor their application process and thus reduces the likelihood of email and telephone questions. The stage is also set for the development of approaches that eliminate some of the paper process associated with communicating these decisions to students.
  • 9/8/10

    Here are the outcomes:

    - reduced the time between a decision and student knowing their decision from as much as 10 days for domestic students and from as much as 2-3 weeks for international students to 3 days on-line

    - reduced the number of emails and phone questions about the status of application

    - set the groundwork for the elimination of supplemental materials to be included in offer of admission envelopes (thus reducing mailing costs and expediting the delivery of this information to students through the on-line process) for first year students at University Park starting for 2011 entering class

    - set the groundwork for the elimination of mail-delivered offers of admission to first year international students at University Park starting with the 2011 entering class

    - improved satisfaction of students, their families, and school counselors with the quick and easy access to admission decisions and associated materials

    - for 2010 we will eliminate all incomplete application (missing information) letters as these notifications are all delivered on-line
