Leveraging Excellence Award Winners

Collaborative programs for advancing teaching and learning practices and developing and deploying best practices in college stores were the 2009 recipients of the annual Leveraging Excellence Award.

The award, sponsored by the National Consortium for Continuous Improvement in Higher Education and Follett Higher Education Group, is designed to recognize initiatives “where effective academic and administrative practices have been successfully implemented beyond one department, campus, or institution.”

The Center for the Integration of Research, Teaching, and Learning at the University of Wisconsin-Madison developed the Delta Program to prepare future faculty to be both excellent researchers and teachers. The program is based on 3 key concepts: applying research methods to teaching, promoting innovation in teaching, and instructor-based improvement of teaching practices. Since 2003, over 1600 graduate students, post-docs, faculty, and staff have participated in the program, and it is being expanded to six other research universities. More information is available at http://www.delta.wisc.edu/.

The Collegiate Retail Alliance was founded in 1999 by independent bookstores at five universities, to provide them with a means of achieving economies of scale. The coalition has focused on developing and deploying best practices to its now 52 member institutions. The Alliance uses a common software program, and is able to negotiate with major suppliers. Sixteen of the larger stores develop and test innovations and improvements, including digital delivery of course materials, supply channel management, and a Web store, to be deployed to the entire Alliance. More information is available at http://www.retailalliance.org/.

2008 recipients of the Leveraging Excellence Award were the Committee on Institutional Cooperation (CIC) for their strategic collaboration and Brigham Young University for their capital needs analysis. More information can be found at http://www.psu.edu/president/pia/features/Issue113.html.
