Nicholas P. Jones
Executive Vice President
and Provost

Dr. Nicholas Jones assumed responsibilities as Executive Vice President and Provost of the Pennsylvania State University in July 2013. As Provost, he is the chief academic officer of the University, responsible for the academic administration of the University’s resident instruction, research, and continuing education, and for the general welfare of the faculty and students. In his role as Executive Vice President, he serves as the chief executive officer in the President’s absence, and is centrally involved in most operations of the University. He also serves as Professor in the College of Engineering.

In other University service, Dr. Jones chairs the meetings of the Council of Academic Deans and the Academic Leadership Council. He serves on President’s Council and is an ex officio member of the University Faculty Senate and Senate Council. He chairs the University Strategic Planning Council which is developing a University-wide Strategic Plan for 2015-16 through 2019-20. 

Dr. Jones holds an M.S. and Ph.D. in Civil Engineering from the California Institute of Technology. His undergraduate degree in Civil Engineering is from the University of Auckland in his home country of New Zealand. He came to Penn State from Johns Hopkins University where he served as the Benjamin T. Rome Dean of the Whiting School of Engineering and previously as Professor and Chairman of Civil Engineering. He also served for two years as Professor and Head of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

His approach to leadership is characterized by collaboration, innovation, and developing strategic partnerships and cross-disciplinary initiatives. He has received several awards for teaching and for research and he maintains professional association with the American Society of Civil Engineers.
