Nicholas P. Jones
Dr. Nicholas Jones assumed responsibilities as Executive Vice President and Provost of the Pennsylvania State University on July 2, 2013. As Provost, he is the chief academic officer of the University, responsible for the academic administration of the University’s resident instruction, research, and continuing education, and for the general welfare of the faculty and students. In his role as Executive Vice President, he serves as the chief executive officer in the President’s absence, and is centrally involved in most operations of the University. He also serves as Professor in the College of Engineering.
Dr. Jones holds an M.S. and Ph.D. in Civil Engineering from the California Institute of Technology. His undergraduate degree in Civil Engineering is from the University of Auckland in his home country of New Zealand. He came to Penn State from Johns Hopkins University where he served as the Benjamin T. Rome Dean of the Whiting School of Engineering and previously as Professor and Chairman of Civil Engineering. He also served for two years as Professor and Head of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
While serving as dean at Johns Hopkins, Dr. Jones directed a strategic restructuring that led to gains in enrollment; expanded academic offerings; significant gains in research funding; increased diversity of faculty and the student body; and the establishment of several interdisciplinary research institutes. His research interests include structural dynamics, flow-induced vibration, and wind engineering.
His approach to leadership is characterized by collaboration, innovation, and developing strategic partnerships and cross-disciplinary initiatives. He has received several awards for teaching and for research and he maintains professional associations with the American Society of Civil Engineers and the American Association for Wind Engineering.
