Stafford Loan Amounts for Graduate and Professional Students

Graduate and Professional Degree-Seeking Students:

  • Stafford Loan (subsidized and unsubsidized): $8,500
  • Extended Stafford Loan (unsubsidized): $12,000

Teacher Certificationa Only:

  • Stafford Loan (subsidized and unsubsidized): $5,500
  • Extended Stafford Loan (unsubsidized): $7,000

Yearly loan amounts may be limited based on other financial aid received and the cost of attendance while enrolled. Loans and other aid can never exceed your cost of attendance, even if the yearly Stafford Loan maximum has not been reached.

Career Maximum

Stafford Loan (subsidized and unsubsidized combined): $138,500
(No more than $65,500 may be subsidized. This includes all Federal Stafford Loans borrowed as an undergraduate student.)

a) Teacher Certification - Due to federal statute, Federal Stafford Loan eligibility is based on fifth year undergraduate loan limits even though you are required to have a bachelor's degree and your admission is administered by the Graduate School at Penn State.
