Federal student financial aid regulations require that a percentage of Penn State's Federal Work-Study allocation be used for positions relating to community service activities. These positions are designed to improve the quality of life or to solve the problems of community residents (particularly low-income individuals). Types of community service positions include:
- Employment in health care, child care, literacy training (e.g., America Reads), education (including tutorial services), welfare, social services, transportation, housing and neighborhood improvement, public safety, crime prevention and control, recreation, rural development, and community involvement.
- Service opportunities with youth corps (as defined in Section 101 of the National and Community Service Act of 1990) and service in agencies, institutions, and activities designated in Section 124(A) of the National and Community Service Act of 1990.
- Support services to students with disabilities.
- Activities in which a student serves as a mentor for purposes of tutoring, supporting educational and recreational activities, and counseling, including career counseling.
Community Service positions can be identified by the sponsoring department by listing a "Y" on the Community Service field on the Job Proposal Screen (AFEJ).
