Office of Student Aid : Applying for Student Aid 2008-08 : 4-Step Application Process : Complete Your Registration
Step 4: Complete Your Registration to Receive Student Financial Aid
- Follow all instructions on the Student Financial Aid Award Notification
- Schedule your classes with the assistance of an academic adviser. Most incoming students do this during First-Year Testing, Counseling and Advising Program (FTCAP) in early summer at the campus they plan to attend. You will be contacted about the FTCAP schedule in late spring.
- An electronic bill (eBill) will be prepared after you have completed FTCAP and/or met with an academic adviser. You will receive an e-mail message from the Office of the Bursar once your eBill is available to view and/or pay via eLion. Your student financial aid will be listed on the bill as a credit.
- If you want your parent/spouse/other to have access to your eBill, you must grant that person access to eLion. He/she must also have either a Penn State Access Account (e.g., as a student or employee) or Friends of Penn State (FPS) account. Instructions for obtaining an FPS account can be found under the Parent/Other menu on eLion. Fall tuition bills are typically available in mid-July and due in early August. Spring tuition bills are typically available in mid-November and due in early December.
Once you receive notice of your eBill, you must pay any balance owed. For billing information and payment options, visit the Office of the Bursar's Web site. You must respond to your eBill even if all charges will be covered by financial aid. By responding, you complete the registration process and confirm that you plan to attend that semester. If you do not complete your registration, your financial aid will not disburse. If you have problems accessing your eBill through eLion, contact the Office of the Bursar.
- The amount you owe will be your total charges less any student financial aid you have been awarded.
- If your total aid exceeds your billable charges for tuition/fees and room/meals (if applicable), you will receive a refund after classes begin.
Your registration is not complete until you access your tuition bill on eLion, pay your tuition and fees, and/or confirm your registration. Incomplete registration can result in loss of aid.
Follow the steps below to complete your registration:
- Select Bills Tuition/Other from the Students menu on eLion.
- Access eBill for the appropriate semester.
- Select a payment option, or complete your registration if your student aid covers your bill.
- If you owe money, indicate how you intend to pay and follow the instructions to make your payment.
- In most cases, financial aid funds do not cover all charges on the eBill. If you think you may need assistance paying the balance, visit the Office of Student Aid Web site to learn more about your options, including payment plans and parent loans.
After you have completed the registration process and begun classes, your financial aid will disburse into your Bursar account and be credited toward your eBill. If your aid exceeds your total charges, you may receive a refund to defray some of your educational expenses (books, etc.) after classes begin. If you are eligible for a refund, it should be available at the beginning of the semester. You may request that the refund be deposited electronically into your bank account. Instructions are available at eLion.
