Next Steps to Summer Aid for Graduate Students
Complete the following steps in order and by the method described for error-free processing of Summer 2008 student financial aid.
Steps 1 - 3 Steps 4 - 5 Steps 6 - 7
Step 4:
Apply for summer Federal Work-Study, if interested.
To be considered, students must submit the FAFSA on the Web (see below) ***and*** answer "yes" to the question on the FAFSA (Q26) regarding interest in Federal Work-Study.
If you are participating in one of the summer Federal Work-Study programs, you must be degree-seeking or in provisional status, and must be planning to enroll at least half-time in the summer, upcoming fall, or upcoming spring.
- Review Federal Work-Study information.
- Request summer Federal Work-Study consideration by accessing Summer Work-Study from the Students menu on eLion between February 15, 2008 and April 1, 2008, or contact the Office of Student Aid (if you do not have access to eLion).
- If you are enrolled in summer 2008 sessions, you must complete the 2007-08 FAFSA. Summer awards are a maximum of $1,600 for graduate students.
- If you are not enrolled in summer 2008 sessions but will enroll in fall 2008 or spring 2009, you must submit the 2008-09 FAFSA on the Web.
The summer Work-Study award if you are not enrolled in summer sessions is $3,000 for graduate students, to be earned during the summer months.
As a graduate student, you will be expected to save $1,500 toward upcoming fall 2008 and spring 2009 semester expenses, which will be counted as part of your 2008-09 student financial aid package.
Step 5:
Apply for summer Federal Direct Stafford Loans, if interested.
- The Direct Stafford Loan will be available if you are an eligible student and have not received the maximum amount of Federal Direct Stafford Loan eligibility during the previous fall and spring semesters.
- If this is the first time you have borrowed a Federal Direct Stafford Loan, access first-time Direct Stafford Loan borrower information.
All first-time borrowers will have to sign the Federal Direct Stafford Loan Master Promissory Note (MPN) and complete Loan Entrance Counseling by accessing Loan Entrance Counseling from the Students menu on eLion at elion.psu.edu, if you have not already done so.
- Request consideration for a summer Federal Direct Stafford Loan, if interested, on eLion beginning April 1, 2008 (or contact the Office of Student Aid, if you do not have access to eLion).
