Become a Mentor for the STEP program!

What's STEP?

STEP is a unique summer program (6/26-8/9/2013) designed for students in business, communications, education, information sciences and technology and liberal arts who are making the junior-year change of campus transition to the University Park campus from other Penn State campuses in order to complete their majors. STEP will help students get an early introduction to the University Park campus, ease their transition to a bigger campus, complete two required junior-year courses, and provide an opportunity to meet other students making the same transition.

So what's a Mentor?

You! An upper-class student that acts as an academic coach and role model for transitional students from other Penn State campuses. You'll help them learn how to succeed at University Park, working with them to figure out the library, computers and time management. You'll also get a chance to help them learn teamwork, polish up their academic skills, and make new friends. To help you feel a part of the STEP program, you may choose to live in a single room in the same residence area as other STEP students. Mentors can register for up to 4 credits or work up to 10 hours per week in an outside job while they are mentors.

Consider being a mentor!

If this opportunity sounds good to you, make plans to apply for a STEP mentor position for this summer. Applications are accepted in the spring of each year for the summer of that year. Email step@psu.edu for more information. So what's in it for you?

  • 665 bucks
  • A great experience (especially for your resume)
  • A chance to work with faculty (and maybe get some recommendation letters)
  • Free single room in a residence hall and a summer board plan

So what qualifications do I need?

  • A cumulative GPA of at least 3.0
  • Strong computer skills and knowledge of library research techniques
  • An interest in collaborative learning and teamwork
  • Good conduct standing with the University

So how do you apply?

Simple! Submit a complete STEP Mentor Application 2013 to 103 Wagner Building by Friday, March 29 at 4:00 pm. Please review the STEP Mentor Agreement 2013 before applying.

Note: Do NOT turn in the Mentor Agreement with your application. That is simply for your information. If you are selected for the position, you will sign the agreement at that time.
