David R. Jones
retired Assistant Managing Editor, New York Times
Dave Jones, a former Assistant Managing Editor for The New York Times, has brought to the trustees a national perspective from many years as a reporter and editor with the Times and The Wall Street Journal.
For seven years, Mr. Jones was a Journal reporter in New York and Pittsburgh. Since 1963, he has worked for the Times in Detroit, Washington and New York. As National Editor, he directed the Times national news report for 14 years, including coverage of four Presidential elections. He later served as Editor of National Editions and Assistant Managing Editor.
For more than 10 years, Mr. Jones has mentored journalism students and supported College of Communications programs. He is a member of the Mount Nittany Society, having endowed two journalism scholarships and contributed to the Pattee Library.
A native of Connellsville, PA, Mr. Jones received his B.A. in journalism in 1954. He was the editor of The Daily Collegian and a member of Parmi Nous and Tau Kappa Epsilon. He has an M.A. in American history from New York University (1961) and was an Air Force officer.
He has received Penn State's Distinguished Alumnus Award (1979) and Alumni Fellow Award (1987).
Mr. Jones was elected to the Board of Trustees by the alumni for a three-year term beginning July 1, 1997 and has been reelected for succeeding terms.
The title of Trustee Emeritus was conferred upon Mr. Jones on July 12, 2013.
