L. J. Rowell, Jr.

Retired Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Provident Mutual Life Insurance Company


Mr. Rowell is chairman of the board, president and chief executive officer (retired) of Provident Mutual Life. In 1955, he received a B.S. in Hotel Administration from Penn State and, in 1971, completed Harvard Business School's Advanced Management Program. He was a captain in the U.S. Marine Corps and served on active duty from 1955 to 1957.

Mr. Rowell has remained active in Penn State activities. He is a life member of the Alumni Association and has served on the national Campaign for Penn State. In 1978, he was awarded the Athletic Alumni Award and was the recipient of two Alumni Fellow Awards in 1987--one from The Mary Jean and Frank P. Smeal College of Business and the other from the College of Health and Human Development. He returned to Penn State the following year as a recipient of the Distinguished Alumnus Award. He was a member of the 1951-54 football teams and received four varsity letters.

He served as a member of numerous committees within Provident Mutual Life. He also serves on the Board of Directors of the Southeast Pennsylvania Chapter of the American Red Cross; The PMA Group; the American College; The Foundation at Paoli; and the Board of Directors of The Milton S. Hershey Medical Center. In 1991, he served as the Chairman of the Major Business Division for The United Way of Southeastern Pennsylvania. Mr. Rowell is past chairman of The American Red Cross Ad Blood Campaign and has served on its Major Contributions Donor Campaign, and past co-chair of the Annual Financial Tribute Dinner of the Philadelphia Council of the Boy Scouts of America.

Mr. Rowell served as a member of the Board of Trustees as a business and industry trustee from July 1, 1992 until June 30, 2007.

The title of Trustee Emeritus was conferred upon Mr. Rowell on July 13, 2007.
