Mr. Schreyer was first appointed to the Board of Trustees by Governor Thornburgh in 1986 and served in that capacity through 1990. In 1990, he was elected by delegates of Industrial Societies for a three-year term and was reelected for two succeeding terms. He served as Vice President of the Board from 1991 to 1992 and President of the Board from 1993 through 1995.

During his tenure on the Board, he served on all committees and was a member of the Executive Committee from 1991 to 1995. Mr. Schreyer served on the Presidential Selection Committee in 1990 and 1995; the Distinguished Alumni Award Screening Committee from 1993-1998; chair of the Corporation for Penn State from 1993-1995; Trustee Liaison with the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics from 1996-1997; and Trustee Liaison for the Campaign in 1998.

Mr. Schreyer and his wife, Joan, established the William A. Schreyer Chair in Global Management Policies and Planning in The Mary Jean and Frank P. Smeal College of Business Administration; created the William A. Schreyer Libraries Endowment in Global Management Policies and Planning; established a $1 million Faculty/Staff Challenge Grant for The Campaign for the Libraries; contributed $1 million for the renovation of the Schreyer House, that serves as the residence of the first families of Penn State, and with the sale of the former residence, helped establish the William A. and Joan Schreyer Endowment for the Institute for Innovation in Learning. In 1997, the Schreyers endowed The Schreyer Honors College through a gift of $30 million.

In 2006, an additional gift of $25 million was received from the Schreyers to allow the Honors College to enhance study abroad opportunities; to focus more intensely on leadership, ethics, integrity, and civic engagement in the Penn State curriculum; to offer more competitive financial aid packages to prospective students; and to preserve the Schreyer Honors College's standing as one of the nation's best.

The title of Trustee Emeritus was conferred upon him in September 1998.
