Information Sciences and Technology (IST)

PROFESSOR JAMES B. THOMAS, Program Coordinator

This major is structured to provide students with the theoretical frameworks and skill sets necessary to compete and be productive in the information technology-intensive global context that defines the new "Information Age." Specifically, the degree will be focused on a program that will build an understanding of core information technologies and related areas of study; will prepare students for the practical application of various information sciences and related technologies; and engage students in sharpening their abilities to think critically and to work in teams. All this will be done with considerable interdisciplinary integration in order to expose students to the cognitive, social, institutional, and global environments of IST. Team projects in most courses, a required internship, and a senior capstone experience provide additional, focused venues for involving students in the cutting-edge issues and technologies of the field.

INFORMATION SYSTEMS DEVELOPMENT OPTION: This option is focused on expanding the skills needed to develop advanced information technology systems using state-of-the-art tools and techniques. The emphasis is on providing the student with both knowledge in the design, implementation, testing and evolution of complex software systems as well as a set of project-oriented, team-programming experiences.

INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY INTEGRATION OPTION: This option is designed to prepare students to use information technology to realize a variety of system-based goals (e.g., reliability, accessibility, efficiency, etc.). It is focused on developing a theoretical foundation and the skill set needed for integrating information technology into different systems for the purpose of enhancing system performance. The emphasis is on providing the student with both the theoretical frameworks needed to use information technology as a system attribute as well as a set of application-oriented experiences and skills.

INFORMATION, SOCIETY, AND PUBLIC POLICY OPTION: This option focuses on how information technology affects social change and the delivery of information to the consumer. This includes the human-machine interface; organization and retrieval of information; digital libraries; information and telecommunications services; information and media industry structures; software services and intermediaries; telecommunications and information law and policy; sociological aspects of technology change; multimedia; and art, design, and aesthetics.

For the B.S. degree in Information Sciences and Technology, a minimum of 125 credits is required.

Astronomy and Astrophysics (ASTRO)

PROFESSOR PETER MÉSZÁROS, Head

Astronomy involves the study of the properties, physical nature and origins of the planets, stars, galaxies and universe as a whole. It involves development of instrumentation, observations of celestial objects with ground- and space-based telescopes, and interpretation of findings using the mathematical laws of physics such as gravity, electromagnetism and quantum mechanics. The undergraduate major provides a strong and broad foundation in mathematics, physical science and computation as well as a detailed understanding of modern astronomy. Many research opportunities are available to complement the formal classwork. Graduates proceed to advanced degrees in astronomy and other sciences, and into a wide variety of technical professions.

For the B.S. degree in Astronomy and Astrophysics, a minimum of 124 credits is required.

ASTRONOMY AND ASTROPHYSICS MINOR: Students must take ASTRO 291 GN(3), 292 GN(3); select 6 credits form 400-level ASTRO courses; and select 6-7 credits from additional ASTRO 400-level courses, E E 492(3), GEOSC 474(3), 481(3), METEO 466(3), or PHYS 458(4) for a total of 18-19 credits.

APPENDIX A.1
UNDERGRADUATE

The Senate Committee on Curricular Affairs, working with the Provost's office, is undertaking the development of an automated prerequisite checking procedure. The actual implementation of the prerequisite checking will provide a variety of levels of implementation, depending on the needs of the academic units.

The first step in the process is a complete review of all course prerequisites across the University. In order to facilitate this review, the Curricular Affairs Committee has implemented an expedited review process that will address prerequisites only. Every academic unit has been asked (via Louis F. Geschwindner's memo of June 5, 2000, to the ACUE Deans) to review their current prerequisite listings and to submit the prerequisite changes that can be made editorially. Appendix A.1 includes the changes that were received in the Faculty Senate Office prior to September 26, 2000. The changes are listed alphabetically under the requesting college.

Proposed effective date: Spring Semester 2001

Information Science (IN SC)

DAVID W. RUSSELL, Division Head, Engineering

Degree Conferred: M.S. in Information Science

Program Requirements
The requirement for the degree is 39 credits of course work. The Master of Science in Information Science program is based on a sequence of 18 credits of required core courses. This is followed by 18 credits of approved electives, selected with the assistance of a graduate adviser, followed by an integrative capstone courses (IN SC 539). Required and elective credits must be distributed so that a minimum of 12 and a maximum of 18 credits derive from the Division of Management and the remainder from the Engineering Division. A grade-point average of at least 3.0 must be achieved, with at least 18 credits at the 500-level.

29-02-059 Add General Option.

Proposed effective date: Spring Semester 2001

Materials Science and Engineering (MATSE)

RICHARD E. TRESSLER, Head of the Department of Materials Science and Engineering

Long-Qing Chen, Coordinator of Graduate Program, Department of Materials Science and Engineering

Degree Conferred: Ph.D., M.S.

The graduate program in Materials Science and Engineering offers comprehensive graduate education in the fundamentals of materials science (synthesis-structure-property-performance relationships) applied to the major classes of materials including ceramics/glass, metals, polymers, composites, electronic and photonic materials, and biomaterials. A student may opt to receive a general degree in materials science and engineering or a degree in materials science and engineering with one of the three more specialized options: ceramic science, metals science and engineering, and polymer science. The general degree program and the three options have uniform overall requirements for the M.S. and Ph.D. degrees with some variations in the candidacy/comprehensive exam questions and in the list of core courses.
