SENATE CURRICULUM REPORT

 

TO: All Senators, the Executive Vice President and Provost, the Vice President for Commonwealth Campuses, Deans, Chancellors, Heads of Departments (Programs, Divisions, Intercollege Programs), Members of the Administrative Council on Undergraduate Education, and Members of the Graduate Council Committee on Programs and Courses.

I. OLD BUSINESS

Questions concerning items that have been held must be resolved within a 90-day period following the approval date of the Senate Curriculum Report. The proposals will be returned to the presenting departments if the hold is not resolved by the end of the 90-day period unless an extension of the hold is granted by the Senate Committee on Curricular Affairs.

RETENTION AND TRANSFER

The following revisions to Entrance to Major requirements have been APPROVED by the Standing Subcommittee on Retention and Transfer:

Information Sciences and Technology
#RT-166 Information Sciences and Technology (ISTBA) has been approved with the following revisions:

Entrance Requirements: To be eligible for entrance to the Information Sciences and Technology (ISTBA) major, students must:

  1. have achieved at least third semester classification and no greater than fourth semester classification while pursuing a program of study appropriate for entry to the major as shown in the Bulletin that includes at least two of the following four
    courses with grades of C or better in each: IST 110, IST 130, IST 210, IST 220
    .

  2. have achieved a minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.00 prior to and through the end of the semester during which the entrance-to-major procedure is carried out.
  1. have consulted with an officially designated College of Information Sciences and Technology academic adviser have met with a member of the IST Advising staff, with the outcome being a workable academic plan selected either from a set of example templates (e.g., pre-law) or developed in consultation with the adviser. This meeting must take place prior to the completion of 60 credits. of course work to design a formal and approved program that meets specific and appropriate educational and/or career goals. At campuses other than University Park, students will meet with a local IST adviser to develop their academic plans.

II. NEW BUSINESS

The Senate Committee on Curricular Affairs is considering the attached proposals. New majors, options, and minors become effective following the approval of the Executive Vice President and Provost. New courses and courses being dropped become effective the first semester following the approval of this Report unless otherwise specified. Changes in existing course offerings will become effective the date of the first published Schedule of Courses listing the changed course, unless written objection is received at the Senate Office, 101 Kern Graduate Building (863-1202) on or before July 16, 2009. A copy of any written objection sent to the Committee must also be sent to the college representative of the sponsoring college. Senate Office staff will communicate the objection to the Senate Committee on Curricular Affairs. Any item to which written objection is made will be reconsidered by the appropriate committee and may be delayed for scheduling.
