UPGRADE NOW FOR ACCESS TO SECURE SITES
University Park, Pa. CAAIS , Penn States Comprehensive Academic and Advising Information System, has unearthed a minor problem that could also apply to other secure Web sites -- sites that are used for banking, making travel reservations or other Internet locations requiring a credit card. But the good news is that its easily fixable. Most secure sites allow users to click through or click "continue" to proceed after the expiration note. However, for a longterm solution, upgrade your Web browser now. The problem is that computer users with old Web browsers Netscape Navigator or Communicator 4.05 or older for Windows and Macintosh, and Internet Explorer for Macintosh that is older than version 4.X -- get a message that their certificate has expired. These old versions were designed with an inbeded expiration date of 12/31/99. To get an upgrade and more information on the problem, go to https://caais.oas.psu.edu/website/expiredcertificate.html
CAAIS is an expert-based computer system that supplements traditional student/adviser meetings for informed educational planning and is used heavily by faculty, advisers and students. The problem showed up last Friday, as students and faculty were working on their class schedules for the Spring Semester, which begins today, Jan. 10.
