Penn State Erie Chapel And Bell Tower Plans Approved
March 17, 2000
Hershey, Pa. Preliminary plans for an interfaith chapel and bell tower at Penn State Erie, the Behrend College, were approved by Penn States Board of Trustees at its March meeting today (3-17) in Hershey."This facility, a reality because of a generous gift, will address the spiritual needs of our students at the Behrend College, and will serve as a visual reminder of the importance of this part of the human experience," said Gary C Schultz, senior vice president for finance and business/treasurer.
The chapel and bell tower will be located along a walkway between the Multi-Purpose Building and Jordan Road, creating a strong pedestrian corridor that extends from one end of campus to the other. Generous landscaping is planned as well. The design by Noelker and Hull Associates of Chambersburg is intended to capture the flavor of historic monastic structures common to many faiths.
The exterior finishes include brick and sanding seam metal roofing. A conference room, gathering space and restrooms will be on the first floor, and a monumental staircase will lead to lobby areas on the upper level. This floor will contain administrative offices, and an octagonal worship space with seating for 180 people. A small meditation room will be located in the base of the bell tower and its high steeple will contain a bell carillon.
Construction of the 9,512 square-foot building is expected to begin in August and is expected to cost approximately $3 million.
