General Aviation Hangar, Berks Campus Student Center Approved

November 17, 2000
University Park, Pa. — Final plans and authorization to obtain bids and award contracts for the General Aviation Hangar at the University Park airport were approved by Penn State’s Board of Trustees today (Nov. 17). The Board also approved and authorized bids and contracts for a revised plan for the Perkins Student Center at Penn State Berks.

The proposed General Aviation Hangar, designed by architects Hoffman Popovich of Boalsburg, features four bays --one for the Life Lion Helicopter and three others that will be leased. It will be located to the east of the most recently completed General Aviation Hangar and similar to it in appearance. The $2 million hangar project includes an extension of the taxiway and apron and 40 new parking spaces.

At Penn State Berks, bids for the original Perkins Student Center plan came in higher than expected because of the heated construction activity in southeastern Pennsylvania. The revised center, projected to cost $1.6 million, was designed by Noelker and Hull of Chambersburg. It will be a 5,700 square-foot, one story addition to the southern end of the existing student center and will include 1,600 square feet of renovated space.

The addition will make room for a student health center, a game room and student organization offices and a multi-purpose room. Renovated space will be used for support services and student affairs offices. The building will have the structural capability to add a second floor, which was part of the original plan, if it is required in the future.
