SMALL TALK: SWIMMERS SMILES
If your water-loving youngsters spend endless hours frolicking in the pool every day, keep a close eye on their teeth. They could be at risk for a brown discoloration dentists call swimmers calculus. In a study of 156 swimmers, ages 6 to 18, who spent six hours or more a day in the water, dentists found that 58 percent experienced staining. They attribute the condition to the swimmers saliva being combined with the chemicals commonly used in swimming pools. Their advice for keeping youngsters teeth pearly white: Be sure to schedule more frequent dental cleanings during swimming season.
"Small Talk" is a weekly column of safety and health information for parents and other caregivers for children. It is a community service of the Penn State Childrens Hospital, located at The Milton S. Hershey Medical Center. GIFT TO ABINGTON BY BAR MITZVAH BOY HONORS FATHER
When most Jewish boys reach 13 years of age, they go through a rigorous Bar Mitzvah ceremony to show that they are ready to accept the obligations of the Ten Commandments. Though highly symbolic, the Bar Mitzvah marks the traditional transition from boyhood to manhood. For Matt Arkans, a 14-year-old from Huntingdon Valley, that maturation process began eight years ago with the unfortunate death of his father. Last October, when Matt finally reached his Bar Mitzvah, he showed that he did possess wisdom beyond his years. Instead of spending all his Bar Mitzvah bounty on a go-cart or trip to Disney World, Matt decided to honor the memory of his father, a Penn State graduate. This fall, Matt will make a $1,000 contribution to Penn State Abington campus, becoming one of the youngest donors in the history of the University. His mother Barbara recently continued her post-secondary studies at Penn State Abington and Matt says he would like to study veterinary medicine at Penn State when he gets a bit older. The Rick Arkans Memorial Scholarship will be awarded to a student with high academic achievement who demonstrates financial need.
