August 4, 2000

University Park, Pa. -- Dr. Henry Foley, professor of chemical engineering at the University of Delaware and director of the Center for Catalytic Science and Technology, has been named the new head of the Department of Chemical Engineering in Penn State’s College of Engineering.

"We believe Dr. Foley's impressive credentials in both industry and academia will be instrumental in leading the chemical engineering department into a new era," said Engineering Dean David Wormley said.

Foley's research areas are nanoporous carbon materials for catalysis and separation, reaction engineering, adsorption, and kinetics. He holds 12 patents and is author of more than 80 papers, several book chapters and an upcoming introductory text on chemical engineering analysis using Mathematica.

His extensive industrial experience includes working for American Cyanamid Co., and consulting with DuPont, Englehard Corp., and as well as many other companies.

His degrees are a B.S. from Providence College and a Ph.D. in physical chemistry from Penn State.

Foley holds numerous memberships in professional and honorary societies including Sigma Xi, Phi Lambda Upsilon, Sigma Pi Sigma, the American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE), the American Society for Engineering Educators, the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and American Chemical Society. Foley was a founding member of the AIChE's Catalysis and Reaction Engineering Division and served as its chair.

His awards and recognition include the New York Metropolitan Catalysis Society's Excellence in Catalysis Award, the Philadelphia Catalysis Club's Annual Award, the Leo C. Friend Award from the I&EC Division of the American Chemical Society, the Research Innovation Recognition Award from Union Carbide Corporation, the Presidential Young Investigator Award from the National Science Foundation, and the Thiele Lecture at the University of Notre Dame.
