Expanding The International Scope Of Universities
June 27, 2000
University Park, Pa. -- The National Association of State Universities and Land-Grant Colleges (NASULGC), the nation’s oldest higher-education association comprising more than 200 universities and colleges, has released a strategic vision statement calling on America’s public universities to enhance their commitment to internationalization.

Entitled Expanding the International Scope of Universities, the document asks public universities to integrate global perspectives and to promote international experiences as part of their core mission. To help higher education institutions operate more effectively in the globalized and inter-connected world of the 21st century, the strategic vision statement encourages these institutions to invest more human and financial resources in internationalization than they have in the past.

Released on behalf of NASULCG by Association President, Peter Magrath, and Chair of NASULGC’s Commission on International Affairs, William E.Kirwan, President of Ohio State University, Expanding was crafted by the Commission’s Strategic Vision Committee chaired by Beverly Lindsay, Dean of Penn State’s University Office of International Programs.

The Strategic Vision Committee also comprised Gloria Braxton of the Southern University and A&M College system, Joel Glassman of the University of Missouri at St. Louis, and Hiram Larew of the U. S. Department of Agriculture. To gather information for the NASULGC publication, the committee contracted university presidents, provosts, vice-provosts, international deans, and a range of faculty and professionals from throughout the United States.

Expanding the International Scope of Universities is available on the new NASULGC website: http://www.nasulgc.org/nasulgcnew/publications/Visions.pdf . You may also order a copy by calling (202-478-6030) or e-mailing ( ).
