Guha To Receive Graduate Student Service Award

University Park, Pa. – Gauri Shankar Guha of Calcutta, India, a doctoral student in Penn State’s Department of Energy, Environmental and Mineral Economics, will receive the 2000 Graduate Student Service Award at an awards ceremony at the Penn Stater Conference Center and Hotel on Sunday, April 9.

The award recognizes a graduate student who has best combined high academic achievement with leadership in University or other public activities.

Guha has combined academics, family life and service to the international student community at Penn State. As president of the International Student Council, he has put forth time and effort to promote cultural understanding within the University community through organizing activities and editing the Globe, the international student newsletter. He has also served on the University Park Allocation Committee, the Student Health Insurance Committee, and as an orientation leader.

In his department, Guha has focused on the economic dimensions of human-environment interactions. His dissertation will address these dimensions as well as the development of a model that would allow humans and ecological systems to sustain each other. In 1999 he won second prize for a paper presentation at the Mineral Economics and Management Society meetings in Ottawa, Canada. He has also participated in environmental conferences in Rio de Janeiro, Vancouver, and Katmandu.

Guha will graduate in the summer of 2001.
