Gauri Guha To Receive Penn State’s Kopp International Graduate Award

University Park, Pa. — Gauri Guha, a Ph.D. student in the energy, environmental and mineral economics department of Penn State’s College of Earth and Mineral Sciences, is known for the enormous amount of time and effort he has expended to create a better understanding of Penn State’s international community.

Now he’s being formally recognized for his accomplishments by being named to receive the 2000 W. LaMarr Kopp International Achievement Award for a graduate student. Guha will honored at an awards ceremony on Sunday, April 9, at the Penn Stater Conference Center Hotel on Penn State’s University Park campus.

Guha is currently president of Penn State’s International Student Council and editor of the GLOBE, an international student newsletter. Over the last few years he has organized several events designed to increase understanding of and among international students and their cultures: the World Festival; an "Interactive Theater" that addressed international student adjustment issues (with Women and Science & Engineering and the Graduate Student Association); "Mahabharatam," an enactment of an Indian epic ballet; and the Mediterranean Festival.

He has organized several sports tournaments open to all Nationality Clubs at Penn State and has served on several University committees.

As a teaching assistant in his department, Guha has introduced international emphases into his courses and has taken part in international conferences in Canada, Brazil and Nepal.

The award recognizes students who have contributed significantly to the advancement of the international mission of the University. It is named for the retired deputy vice president for international programs.
