March 23, 2000

University Park, Pa. — Lauren Grayson of Gibsonia, a senior majoring in political science at Penn State, will receive the 2000 Jackson Lethbridge Tolerance Award and will be honored at an awards ceremony on Sunday, April 9, in the Penn Stater Conference Center Hotel at Penn State’s University Park campus.

The award, named for a Penn State alumnus, recognizes a junior or senior for outstanding efforts to enhance the understanding of diverse cultures and create a community where all individuals are accepted and valued equally.

At Penn State, Grayson orchestrated a University-wide celebration of Martin Luther King Jr. Day, organized King day events, and supervised more than 90 student groups doing community service. Last summer, Grayson spent three weeks teaching preschool children in Quito, Ecuador. She has also worked with Native American tribes through the Corporation for National Service in Washington, D.C.

Her many other activities also include organizing a student-to-student mentoring program at Penn State’s Schreyer Honors College.

Grayson has a 3.74 grade-point average and will graduate this spring. In August she will joint "Teach for America" and teach at the elementary level in an inner-city New Jersey school
