January 19, 2001
University Park, Pa. Edward R. Hintz, president of the New York-based private money management firm Hintz, Holman, and Hecksher, Inc., and Cynthia Baldwin, judge in the Allegheny County Court of Common Pleas, were elected chairman and vice-chairman, respectively, of Penn States Board of Trustees today (Jan. 19).
Hintz was first elected to the Board of Trustees by delegates from industrial societies in July, 1994, and has been re-elected for succeeding terms. He served as vice-chairman from 1998-2000.
A 1959 graduate of Penn State, Hintz went on to earn an M.B.A. from Harvard University in 1963. He began his career as an investment manager and analyst, working for several top firms in the securities field before founding Hintz, Holman, and Hecksher, Inc. in 1974. The firm has been consistently cited in The Wall Street Journal as having an outstanding long-term investment record.
Hintz spearheaded the Universitys second major capital campaign, A Grand Destiny: The Penn State Campaign. He and his wife, Helen Skade Hintz, have provided a broad range of philanthropic support to Penn State, including a 1997 pledge of $5 million that, among other academic priorities, has helped fund the new Hintz Family Alumni Center on the University Park campus.
Baldwin, the first African American female judge elected to the Allegheny County Court of Common Pleas, is a gubernatorial appointee to the Board of Trustees. She received her B.A. and M.A. from Penn State, and holds adjunct law faculty posts at Duquense University and Widener University. She has served as chair of Penn States international alumni association from 1991-1993.
Baldwin was chosen as a Fulbright Scholar for the summer of 1994 and lectured at the University of Zimbabwe Law Faculty in Constitutional Law and Jurisprudence. While there, she assisted in the development of a trial advocacy program and interacted with the members of the Supreme Court on constitutional issues in the cases coming before them.
A seasoned attorney, Baldwin has been associated with several law firms and served as attorney-in-charge in the Bureau of Consumer Protection in the Office of the Attorney General of Pennsylvania. She is a member of the Allegheny County Bar Association and serves on the House of Delegates of the Pennsylvania Bar Association, and is a gubernatorial appointee to the Pennsylvania Commission on Crime and Delinquency.
Also elected officers of the Board of Trustees were Paula R. Ammerman, associate secretary; Carolyn A. Dolbin, Joan L. Coble, and Diane J. Shaw, assistant secretaries; Gary C. Schultz, treasurer; and David F. Marshall, Deborah M. Meder, and Joseph J. Doncsecz, assistant treasurers.
