Penn State Appoints Garban, Rowell, And Schultz
To Hershey Medical Center Board Of Directors

May 11, 2001
University Park, Pa. – The Penn State Board of Trustees today (May 11) approved the appointments of Steve A. Garban, L.J. Rowell, Jr., and Gary C. Schultz to the Board of Directors of The Milton S. Hershey Medical Center.

Each appointment is for a three-year term ending June 30, 2004.

Garban is a member of the Penn State Board of Trustees and the senior vice president of finance and operations/treasurer emeritus of Penn State.  Rowell is also a member of the Penn State Board of Trustees and chairman of the board, president, and chief executive officer (retired) of Provident Mutual Life. Schultz currently serves as the University’s senior vice president for finance and business/treasurer.

In May 2000, the University’s Board of Trustees approved the establishment of the corporation “The Milton S. Hershey Medical Center,” a Pennsylvania non-profit organization charged with employing personnel, owning equipment, and holding the hospital and other licenses necessary to provide healthcare services.

The Board of Directors of The Milton S. Hershey Medical Center consists of 15 members serving three-year staggered terms. Nine directors are appointed by Penn State’s Board of Trustees. The University’s senior vice president for health affairs – who also serves as dean of the College of Medicine and chief executive officer of the medical center – serves ex officio as a director, and one physician who chairs a clinical department receives an appointment to the board. The remaining four directors were selected in 2000 as part of the initial establishment of the new corporation and appoint their own successors.

Together, these 15 directors are responsible for the governance of The Milton S. Hershey Medical Center, subject to the authority of Penn State’s Board of Trustees to appoint and remove members.
