April 4, 2001
University Park, Pa. -- Ian Marshall, Professor of English at Penn State Altoona and author of STORY LINE: EXPLORING THE LITERATURE OF THE APPALACHIAN TRAIL, will deliver a lecture/workshop in the Foster Auditorium, Pattee Library, on Monday, April 16th, at 4 p.m. The lecture is free and open to the public.
Professor Marshall's presentation, titled "Literature, Nature, and Psychological Needs: On the Colorado Trail," is part of a series of interdisciplinary lectures and workshops devoted to the topic of Nature and Culture, and it is sponsored by the American Studies Program, the English Department, and University Libraries.
Marshall's STORY LINE was hailed by critics when it was published in 1998. Scott Slovic, of the University of Nevada, Reno, called it "a phenomenally innovative, profound, and engaging book," and Keith Schneider, writing in the NEW YORK TIMES BOOK REVIEW, said that Marshall "blazed an engrossing new path to experience some of the Appalachian Trail's finest literature." Professor Marshall's lecture is part of work in progress that explores the interconnectedness of literature, nature, and the satisfaction of psychological needs.
