Pow Wow To Close American Indian Event
March 27, 2001
University Park, Pa. – Penn State’s first ever traditional American Indian pow wow, a celebration of dance and culture, will be held from 6 to 10 p.m. on Saturday, March 31, at the Penn Stater Conference Center Hotel. The pow wow will cap off the American Indian Leadership Program (AILP) conference, “A Tradition of Leadership,” and the public is invited to attend free of charge. Several American Indian dance troupes, such as the Allegheny River Dancers from the Iroquois Nation and dancers representing Ojibway and Lakota styles from the Ohio River Valley, will perform specialty dances. The Many Voices Singers, a nationally renowned American Indian drum group, will provide the music and traditional songs. Emcee Bill Crouse, of the Iroquois Nation, will explain the performances for the audience. The event is drug and alcohol free. The AILP is a graduate program of the College of Education for American Indian and Alaska Native students now celebrating its 30th year.
