HURLEY NAMED ASSISTANT VICE PRESIDENT
OF HOUSING AND RESIDENCE LIFE

University Park, Pa. - Gail Hurley has been promoted to assistant vice president of Housing and Residence Life, effective Jan. 2.

In 2001, Hurley assumed the role of director of Housing and Residence Life. This position was created to bring central leadership to the two departments with reporting lines directly to the vice president for Student Affairs and the associate vice president for Auxiliary and Business Services.

The new title recognizes Hurley's responsibility for developing a comprehensive vision and strategic plan for on-campus living, which includes the Eastview Terrace project, the expansion to Redifer Commons and renovation of Pollock Commons, all at the University Park campus.
"Gail has demonstrated outstanding vision and leadership as director of Housing and Residence Life," said William Asbury, vice president for Student Affairs. "We are confident that she will continue to make great strides in her new role."

Hurley is responsible for a housing system at University Park of more than 13,000 residents and a residence life program that spans nine campus locations. She will continue to oversee the management of residence buildings, laundry services, special interest housing and resident programs. In addition, she will continue to assist with special projects in Student Affairs and Auxiliary and Business Services.

"We are pleased to have the opportunity to recognize Gail and the role she plays in the quality of life of thousands of Penn State students," said Thomas Gibson, associate vice president of Auxiliary and Business Services. "On-Campus living is an integral part of the College experience and Gail's efforts have made Penn State a model for the rest of the country."

Hurley has been the director of Residence Life since 1984. In 1997, she was appointed as the assistant to the vice president for student affairs, serving as liaison to student affairs directors at 19 campus locations. From September 1996 through May 1997 she was an intern to the senior vice president for finance and business/treasurer as part of the Administrative Fellow program.
Hurley holds a bachelor's degree in Spanish secondary education from Westminster College and a master's degree in college student personnel from Bowling Green State University.
