Joyner To Lead Next Series Of Forum Speakers

University Park, Pa. – David M. Joyner, chairman and chief executive officer of Elan Cosmetics Center, Inc. and member of Penn State's Board of Trustees, will deliver the Penn State Forum lecture at noon on Thursday, Jan. 16, at the Penn Stater. The topic of his presentation is "The Olympic Experience from a Team 'Doc's' Point of View."

Joyner began a medical career in sports medicine following residencies in general and orthopedic surgery at Penn State's Milton S. Hershey Medical Center and a brief stint in the World Football League.

A board-certified in orthopedic surgery and former clinical associate professor of orthopedic surgery for the Hershey Medical Center, Joyner was the founder and former chairman of the board and CEO of Joyner Sportsmedicine Institute, Inc., which developed 20 outpatient physical therapy centers located in seven states from 1992 to 1998.

Since 1985, Joyner has been active in sports medicine activities with the United States Olympic Committee and currently sits on the sports medicine advisory committee for the organization. He also serves on the PASO (Pan American Sports Organization – Pan American Games) Medical Commission and is on the Pennsylvania Governor's Council on Physical Fitness and Sports. He is Chairman of the United States Olympic Sports Medicine Committee and is a member of the American Orthopedic Society for Sports Medicine.

He received a bachelor's degree in 1972 from Penn State and in 1976 he graduated from the College of Medicine. In 1992, he was named a Distinguished Alumnus of Penn State. Joyner was elected to Penn State's Board of Trustees for a three-year term in 2000.

            The Penn State Forum is a lunchtime speaker series offered by the Faculty Staff Club and is sponsored in part by the Penn State Bookstore. It is open to the public. Tickets are $10 for members and $12 for non-members and include lunch. Reservations can be made by mail or by stopping by the Faculty Staff Club office at 103 HUB-Robeson Center. Tickets will be on sale at the door on a first-come, first-served basis. Lunch begins at 11:30 a.m. followed by the speech and a question-and-answer session at noon.
