    Penn State was elected to membership in the national Human Computer Interaction Consortium (joining the elite universities and industrial research laboratories in HCI research including; MIT, Stanford, Carnegie-Mellon, the University of Michigan, the University of Colorado, Georgia Tech, Virginia Tech, Microsoft Research, IBM Research, PARC, Sun Research and Mitsubishi Electric Research Laboratories).

    Penn State IST faculty were awarded 3 National Science Foundation Career Awards (of 28 TT faculty).

    Penn State (led by IST) was named by the National Security Agency as a Center of Academic Excellence in Information Assurance Education.

    In October, Penn State IST hosted a National Science Foundation Information Technology Work Force (ITWF) and Information Technology Research/Education Work Force (ITR/EWF) Principal Investigators Conference in Philadelphia.

    Penn State IST was awarded the Department of Defense (DoD) Information Assurance (IA) Scholarship and Capacity Building Program, a multi-year program to educate undergraduates and graduates in information assurance and computer security.

    Penn State IST was awarded a Defense University Research Instrumentation Program (DURIP) for Advanced Visualization Environment to Support Collaborative Intelligence Analysis and Situation Assessment ($200,000).

    Penn State IST was recognized by the United States Department of the Air Force Research Laboratory (Wright Lab) via a USAF Educational Partnership Agreement.

    Lee Giles was awarded a NASA grant for the Architecture for the Next Generation CiteSeer.
