Since 2005, the Student Poster Conference of Penn State Schuylkill has showcased student research, scholarship, and creative accomplishments from a variety of disciplines. The conference is held each semester on the last Wednesday of classes.
Since 2001, the Undergraduate Research Center in the Penn State Schuylkill Library has provided a location for faculty-student teams to conduct large and publishable research on a variety of topics that have included child obesity prevention, predictors of violent romantic relationships, patterns of campus social integration, and community responses to 9/11. Since establishment of the Undergraduate Research Center, 15 undergraduates have become co-authors on publications in national refereed journals and conferences.
FACULTY SUPERLATIVES
W. Keith Duffy, Assistant Professor of Humanities and Writing, recently had an original musical composition licensed for the HBO series, "The Sopranos." This was accompanied by the publication of two related research articles, "The Rhetoric of Electronic Music" and "Digital Recording Technology in the Composition Class."
Cathy Fiorillo, Instructor in Theatre, has adapted for the stage five John O'Hara novels and four of his short stories. She is currently in the process of preparing to publish these stage adaptations. Judith L. Stephens, Professor of Humanities and Theatre, has recently published The Plays of Georgia Douglas Johnson: From the New Negro Renaissance to the Civil Rights Movement (University of Illinois Press, 2006) and "Art, Activism, and Uncompromising Attitude: The Anti-Lynching Plays of Georgia Douglas Johnson" in the Spring 2006 issue of African American Review. Charles Cantalupo, Professor of English, Comparative Literature and African Studies, published a new book of translations, Who Needs a Story? Contemporary Eritrean Poetry in Tigrinya, Tigre and Arabic (Hdri: Asmara, 2006). In 2006 he was invited to show his documentary, Against All Odds: African Languages and Literatures into the 21st Century (written and directed by Cantalupo; produced by Audio Visual Institute of Eritrea) at The World Bank, Tufts University, African Languages Teachers Association conference, and the British Association for Applied Linguistics conference on "Linguistic Diversity in Africa." He also published a number of translations of poetry, and was invited to chair a panel and speak on "Revitalizing Language Through Literature and Literature Through Language," at fourth Peoples Poetry Gathering at the Bowery Poetry Club in New York City. Hartmut Heep spent a year teaching and carrying out research in India as a Fullbright Scholar at the University of Mumbai. He gave invited lectures in Bombay, Kolkata, New Delhi, Chennai, and conducted seminars at various institutions of higher learning in Bombay, and Gujarat. Don Lindenmuth is the founder and organizer of the Religious and Philosophical Forum (RAPF) Lecture Series. Begun in 1986, it is now beginning its twentieth year. This highly successful series continues into the present under Dr Lindenmuth's leadership. Dan Vice & Melissa Knolter are field trip leaders for the Geologic Society of America in October 2006 at Centralia, Pa. Ping Wang published in May 2006 in Applicable Analysis: "Reconstruction of Spatial Heat Sources in Heat Conduction Problems" Darcy Medica: Research investigation : West Nile Virus in Kestrels . The Study is in conjunction with Hawk Mountain Observatory. Leah Ann Fetsko conducted research at Penn State Milton S. Hershey Medical Center on In Utero Exposure to Marijuana - how it will effect later use of drugs & drug addiction; and published "Effects of Age & Dopamine D2L Receptor-deficiency on Motor & Learning Functions," Neurobiology of Aging 2005; and "Acquisition and Extinction of Facilitation in the C57BL/6J Mouse," Learning & Behavior 2006. Mary Kay Burns has developed the Psychology Internship Program for the Psychology Program of Penn State Schuylkill, which allows students to find their professional direction and develop their professional skills in applied settings. Students may choose from over 40 internship sites that include human service agencies, hospitals, schools, and prisons in surrounding counties. Helen Hendy has received $25,000 in Health Initiative Funds from the University for a study of the "KIDS CHOICE PROGRAM -- A School/Parent Partnership for Child Obesity Prevention." Developed in cooperation with Dr. Keith Williams from Penn State Hershey Medical Center and Mr. Thomas Camise from Schuylkill Haven Area School District, the study will be conducted by a research team of 23 Psychology undergraduates. |
