Athar Discusses Islamic Perspective On Malcolm X

University Park, Pa. - The Center for Ethics and Religious Affairs at Penn State will present its seventh annual Malcolm X Memorial Lecture, Thursday, Feb. 20, at 7:30 p.m. at the Paul Robeson Cultural Center.
Shahid Athar, M.D., clinical associate professor at the Indiana University School of Medicine and U.S. representative for World Muslim Congress, will speak on the Islamic community's perspective on Malcolm X.
Athar, a native of India and U.S. citizen since 1978, has written and published more than 60 articles on Islam and is a recognized expert on Islamic studies. His list of publications includes: "Islamic Perspectives in Medical Ethics," "The Gulf Crisis and American Muslims," "Islam in North America," "Why Muslim?," "Malcolm X - Prince of Islam in North America," "What Is Required of us as Muslims - Reflections of an American Muslim" and "Oklahoma City Bombing - Reflections of an American Muslim."
After studying medicine in Pakistan, Athar completed his residency in internal medicine at Cook County Hospital, Chicago. A seven-time recipient of the American Medical Association's Physician Recognition Award, Athar continues in private practice, specializing in endocrinology, diabetes and internal medicine.
Past chairman of Interfaith Alliance, Athar is an active member of the Council for National Interest, Christians and Muslims for Peace, Amnesty International, Physicians for Human Rights and the Islamic Medical Association.
