Maurine Claver Named Director
Of Environmental Health, Safety
4-11-96
University Park, Pa. -- Maurine Claver has recently been appointed director of the Division of Environmental Health and Safety. She joined Penn State in 1979 as an industrial hygienist, and was promoted through the ranks to serve as associate director in 1994. She replaces H.O. Triebold, Jr., who retired last month.
"Maurine brings a great deal of energy, administrative and managerial skill to this position," says Dave Stormer, assistant vice president for safety and environmental services. "Her knowledge and judgment has earned her the respect of both state and federal regulatory agencies, which is very important to Penn State's research and compliance efforts."
As director, Claver is responsible for the administration of Penn State's Environmental Health and Occupational Health and Safety programs, including asbestos control, compliance with right-to-know legislation, hazardous and infectious waste disposal, laboratory safety, chemical safety, ergonomics, environmental regulations, PCB control and industrial hygiene.
She also administers the state-certified Penn State Hazardous Materials Response Team, which is responsible for providing emergency control of hazardous material releases throughout Centre County.
As part of these programs, Claver evaluates University facilities and practices and develops comprehensive industrial hygiene programs, and conducts industrial hygiene evaluations for biological and chemical contaminants and physical hazards. She also oversees a laboratory safety program for facilities using chemical carcinogens, biohazardous materials and recombinant DNA molecules, as well as training programs on related topics such as food sanitation and chemical handling.
The University's environmental regulatory compliance activities, which Claver administers, includes evaluating pending state and federal regulation and establishing University-wide programs to insure compliance. She represents the University in Superfund-related problem resolutions and developed and supervises the University-wide Asbestos Control Program.
Claver is a member of the American Industrial Hygiene Association. At Penn State has been a member of the University Biosafety Committee, the Worker's Compensation Advisory Board, the Smoking Policy Review Committee, and served on the Institutional Review Board from 1985 to 1988. She also was a member of the Commission for Women in 1987-1988.
A summa cum laude graduate in environmental health from the University of Massachusetts, Claver received a master's degree in public health from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
Before coming to Penn State, Claver was an occupational health and safety officer at the University of North Carolina and a health officer in the Office of Research Safety at the National Cancer Institute.
She and her husband, Alan who is an information specialist with the University Libraries, have two children. They live in State College.
