Students spruce up neighborhood and
discover they can make a difference
The students lived in West Philadelphia for a
month and performed community service related to their academic majors for
a class taught by associate professor of geography Lakshman Yapa. Yapa's class
is titled "Rethinking Urban Geography." What the students did is called public
scholarship -- combining volunteer activities with academics -- an idea that
has taken root at Penn State and across the nation.

University President Graham B. Spanier will give
his annual State of the University Address at 4 p.m. Friday, Aug. 27, in Eisenhower
Auditorium on the University Park campus. Faculty, staff, students and community
members are encouraged to attend.
Ridge invites nation's governors to Penn
State in summer 2000
Last week Gov. Tom Ridge invited the nation's
governors and their families to visit Pennsylvania -- selected as the host
state of the 92nd Annual Meeting of the National Governors' Association (NGA)
in 2000. State College, home to the University Park campus, will serve as
the host city for this gubernatorial summit from July 8-11, 2000.
