Sandusky earns
Alumni Fellow honors

Jerry A. Sandusky, founder of The Second Mile, a charitable organization that addresses the welfare of young people, and defensive coordinator for the Nittany Lions football team, has been named a Penn State Alumni Fellow.

The Alumni Fellow Award is the most prestigious award given by the Penn State Alumni Association. Sandusky will receive the award at a ceremony to be held at the University Park campus on Oct. 3.

Sandusky graduated first in his class when he received his bachelor of science degree in health and physical education from Penn State in 1966. He earned his master's degree in 1971 from the University.

A native of Washington, Pa., Sandusky was a starting defensive end for the Lions from 1963-65. Following his graduation in 1966, he held one-year coaching positions at Juniata College in Huntingdon, Pa., and Boston University before returning to Penn State as an assistant coach in 1969. In 1977, he was promoted to defensive coordinator.

The Alumni Fellow program was conceived in 1973 by the Penn State Alumni Association to honor prominent and outstanding alumni who are leaders in their fields and who have made notable contributions to society and their communities.

Sandusky is the founder of The Second Mile, which effectively addresses the social and emotional development of youth through the provision of high quality, innovative prevention, early intervention and community-based programs and services to young people, their families and the professionals who serve them throughout Pennsylvania.

More than 125,000 children with special needs throughout the state benefit annually through the Second Mile's eight programs, two offices and two chapters.
