New school features online photo gallery

The University's newest academic unit -- the School of Information Sciences and Technology -- is already showcasing high-tech innovation in its headquarters in the Rider Building at University Park. A new digital photography gallery featuring student artwork is on display.

The gallery, a collaboration between IST and the College of Arts and Architecture's School of Visual Arts, highlights 19 photos originated from Penn State's digital photography program under Gerald Lang, professor of art, and Keith Shapiro, assistant professor of art. The photos will be rotated every six months to allow the latest images to enliven the IST offices.

"We wanted to have something different. With a small number of students, IST is a family oriented school, and that is reflected in our involvement with the students," said Kate Itinger, administrative assistant to the associate dean. "We placed the work in an area where many students will see it when visiting their instructors. It gives the school more of a personal feel."

In classes of 16 students, groups of four worked together to create each photograph. The collaborative process worked well in this environment as the energy of each individual built up and multiplied, which allowed for an interesting outcome in the final product, said Lang. Students also liked the group process because it allowed them to exchange ideas with one another, enhancing their learning experience. The School of Visual Arts' digital photography classes attract a wide variety of students, graduate students and University employees of diverse backgrounds and ages. This diversity was reflected in the different images the teams produced, ranging from a person peeking through dried leaves to three mannequins arranged under tulle.

The photographs featured in this gallery, along with students' portfolios, can be found on the Web at http://www.psu.edu/photography/.
