GrandDestinyColor"Giving back to Penn State seems natural to me. I target my gifts to my own department to help build our collections, for preservation and processing projects. It makes me more comfortable in asking others for help when I've done my part too."

-- Lee Stout is University archivist in the Special Collections Department of the University Libraries. He has been a member of the Libraries faculty since 1974.

Knight Foundation provides grant
to continue minority recruitment program
The John S. and James L. Knight Foundation promo

The John S. and James L. Knight Foundation has provided a grant of $250,000 to continue support of the Knight Diversity Scholars Program in the College of Communications.

Since it was established with an initial grant of $100,000 in 1993 and an additional grant of $120,000 in 1998, the program has enabled the College of Communications to recruit, retain, graduate and place gifted minority students from throughout the country. The program has been the impetus behind and the centerpiece of an array of efforts on the part of the college to attract such scholars to its program.

The college's percentage of minority students at University Park -- 13.1 percent -- is higher than both the University's percentage of 11.7 and the state of Pennsylvania's 12.3 percent. Retention rates for College of Communications students of color between their freshman and sophomore years have averaged 92.3 percent since 1992.

The John S. and James L. Knight Foundation promotes excellence in journalism worldwide and invests in the vitality of 26 U.S. communities.
