Campuses receive funds
to promote prevention

The Commission for the Prevention of Alcohol Tobacco and Other Drugs (CPATODA) has awarded more than $60, 000 in funds to 12 Penn State campuses. These mini-grants will support the campuses' strategies in furthering their alcohol, tobacco and drug prevention efforts.

"We want to make sure that Penn State campuses have the funds to run their innovative prevention programs," said Peggy Lorah, CPATODA chairperson. "Penn State is fortunate to have people so dedicated to them. We're delighted to provide them with financial support that they need."

The funds will be used for a variety of different projects, including alcohol-free late-night programming, freshman seminars, speakers, substance-abuse literature, abuse intervention programs, peer educators and much more.

The recipient campuses -- Abington, Altoona, Beaver, Delaware County, DuBois, Harrisburg, Hazelton, McKeesport, New Kensington, Schuylkill, Wilkes-Barre and Worthington-Scranton -- are required to attend the 2003 CPATODA Best Practices Conference, where they will share program successes and failures with their counterparts.

This is the first year CPATODA has awarded mini-grants, but Lorah said she hopes the grants will be available for years to come.

The mission of CPATODA is to foster an environment that does not support the abuse of alcohol, tobacco or other drugs. Its membership consists of Penn State students, faculty staff and administrators. For more information on CPATODA, check the Web at http://www.psu.edu/ATOD/.
